Lil Yachty - Lil Boat 2 (Quality Control/Capitol/Motown Records)

Released: March 9th, 2018

The 2015 viral sensation Lil Yachty, has built a large following in an extremely short amount of time. After his breakout mixtape Lil Boat, Yachty developed a crowd of fans who were addicted to his goofy bars and bedroom beats. On his debut album, Teenage Emotions (2017), we saw Yachty push himself to new grounds. He proved his worth on "Peek a Boo (feat. Migos)" but really stretched his abilities on the awkwardly fun "Bring it Back".

The 20-year-old is back with his latest project, Lil Boat 2, a darker and gloomier attempt that contrasts his previous work.

Yachty, 2 Chainz and K$upreme flaunt on "Oops", trading bars over ominous production. The same occurs on "Get Money Bros." but this time with fellow artist Tee Grizzley. A true standout from the first half is "Talk To Me Nice (feat. Quavo)", mainly because the Migos' member carries the load.

Other highlights from the album include "She Ready (feat. PnB Rock)" and "66 (feat. Trippie Redd)".

Both of these tracks capture that original, playful Yachty sound. "She Ready" includes throbbing, woodwind stabs while a higher-pitched melody rides on top. The beat is simple and straightforward, playing on Yachty's talents. "66" is a smooth song. Floating synth chords hover above the instrumental while Yachty and Trippie Redd tag team the closing track.

On Lil Boat 2, Yachty veers in a darker direction for 17 tracks, presenting a different side to himself that has yet to be seen on a full album. Unfortunately, this process didn't work in his favor, capturing my appeal on only a handful of songs. Listen below...

Logic - Bobby Tarantino II (Def Jam)

Released: March 9th, 2018

From Gaithersburg, MD to the Grammy's stage, Logic has presented his musical and lyrical content in a handful of ways. On the opening track, the character's from the animated sitcom Rick and Morty discuss playing Logic while aboard "Grandpa's Space Ship":

Rick: Morty, calm down, of course, I love Logic. Who doesn't like Logic? You gotta be a fuckin' idiot if you don't like Logic. But the question is, what "Logic" are we talkin' about here?
Morty: What do you mean?
Rick: Well are we talkin' about mixtape Logic or album Logic?
Morty: What does it matter? I mean Logic is Logic
Rick: Morty, it matters very much

On his last record, Everybody (2017), Logic discussed complex topics regarding skin color, racial violence, suicide, depression, and much more. In his earlier days, we never saw that from Logic. His early mixtapes were a representation of an up and coming rap-star, but never that of a Grammy nominated pop-musician. So in Rick's defense, what are we talking about here? Album Logic or Mixtape Logic. In this case, it's purely the latter.

On Bobby Tarantino II, Logic delivers party bangers and creative flows over dense and catchy beats. He even shouts out his OG r.a.t.t. pack fans on "Warm it Up (feat. Young Sinatra)", a true ode for his earliest mixtape listeners.

His unique flow bounces off of patterned synth work on "Overnight" while he speeds up on "44 More", a follow-up to "44 Bars" from Bobby TarantinoPittsburgh legend Wiz Khalifa features on the track "Indica Badu", where Logic and he spit verses over shimmering synthesizers and a swimming bass line. We find some harder production on "Contra" and "Wassup (feat. Big Sean)", both containing trap beats with deep bass hits.

Logic fails to entertain me on "Everyday" with EDM producer Marshmello. I can't take him seriously when the lead hook is "I work hard every mother fucking day", too corny in my opinion.

Overall, Logic delivered a well-built, 43 minute mixtape full of catchy songs with no deep message or theme. He delivered bar after bar over smooth and infectious beats. Bobby Tarantino II includes some of the Maryland product's best lines, adding to his already solid discography. Listen below...
