PNTHN - Potluck - EP (797524 Records DK)

Released: February 20th, 2018

Following in the footsteps of other contemporary hip-hop groups, PNTHN (Pantheon) is next in line to make waves in the modern rap-game. San Marcos, Texas based, their team is a conglomerate of rappers, producers, and DJs with different styles. After delivering tracks here and there on Soundcloud for a little over a year, Potluck is PNTHN's first EP, a project that spans 18 minutes full of lo-fi, minimalistic hits.

The lead track "Chumbucket", titled after the unsuccessful restaurant from SpongeBob SquarePants, is a low-key, concise banger. Phasing synth chords pan back and forth while a simple drum pattern leads the way. The whole group trades bars throughout the four-minute tune, grabbing the listeners attention right from the start.

"Mewtwo" is another standout from Potluck. A shivering flute sample complements the glistening sound effects and heavy, minimalistic beat. The sonics on this track are smooth, creating a moody and smoky vibe. They refer to their own name, calling themselves "Gods" during each refrain on one of the best songs from the EP.

Each track is a highlight and can hold its own ground. From the glitchy piano loop on "Vigilantes" to the snapping snares on "Bunta", the group shows promise for what's to come. Their flows and styles are refreshing, especially when attached to their effortless beats and synth-heavy melodies.

All throughout Potluck, we hear up-and-coming group PNTHN define and carve their sound and hip-hop presence. Using simple, tight melodies and crisp production, the Texas collective delivers 6 tracks that prove their worth. Listen below...
