De Lux - More Disco Songs About Love (Innovative Leisure)

Released: January 19th, 2018

Los Angeles based alt-pop duo De Lux are back with their third full-length release, More Disco Songs About Love. This is a follow-up to Generation, their previous album from 2015.

Founding members Sean Guerin and Isaac Franco create modern disco tracks and catchy alt-pop tunes throughout this new record. From the glittering synthesizer work all the way to the 70's and 80's style guitar filters, De Lux combines past disco elements with contemporary styles to create a well put-together alternative album.

Track one, "875 Dollars", is an alternative and electronic-pop barnburner. De Lux combines driving synths, bright melodies and edgy guitar work to form a solid, six-minute tune. The unique lead vocal, eerily similar to David Byrne's cadence, fits in between the grooves and sonics nicely. A concise and chirping keyboard element jumps around throughout the song. Great start to a great album.

Immediately after the opener, the duo hits you with a fantastic string of songs.

"These Are Some of the Things That I Think About" contains a looping and throbbing synth melody. Accompanied by a consistent drum pattern and airy synth pads, this is a true album highlight.

Another standout appears on "Cause for Concern". A very simple kick snare pattern carries the song along side a groovy synth-bass. Different guitar patterns appear throughout, adding layers to the track. De Lux sounds very anthemic on the chorus...

This is a terrible life
One that doesn't seem to die
This is a cause for concern
One that begs for love at night

One of my favorites from the album is "Keyboards Cause We're Black and White". Right out of the gate, a choppy and pleasant guitar pattern hits the waves, leading you right into the song. All different styles of synthesizers converge to form an extremely catchy tune. The chorus is infectious too, even though it just contains the simple phrase keyboards cause we're black and white. Very stiff and electronic arpeggiators appear throughout.

Although very catchy, More Disco Songs About Love does have its shortcomings. After a few listens, the album becomes tried, not retaining its primary appeal. The album is very top-heavy too. The latter half of the track-list is not nearly as infectious or contagious as the beginning. Also, some of the songs are way too long for their content. This isn't a problem if you truly enjoy the album's jam sections, but then again, these become stale after a few listens as well.

Overall, De Lux delivered a decent third album. More Disco Songs About Love is a catchy record full of 70's and 80's disco resemblance. Filled with poppy guitar play, shining synthesizers, unique vocal arrangements, and driving drum layers, this record sticks to a consistent theme, one that is danceable, groovy and flat-out catchy.

De Lux finds a way to combine previous generations with contemporary sonics to develop a truly particular, infectious sound. Listen below...
