Porches - The House (Domino Recording Co.)

Released: January 19th, 2018

Porches is back with their third album, The House. Porches is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Aaron Maine. Maine is known for his synth heavy indie-pop and indie-rock that is very fluid and colorful; mainly using the power of synthesizers to intoxicate the listener.

Porches last album Pool (2016) was a collection of songs that did just that. This LP included solid indie-rock tunes along side very moody and nocturnal synth-pop.

On The House, Maine dives into that same category, using the power of synths and keys to excite the listener while branching out on a few tracks.

Highlights from The House include "Leave the House", "Find Me" and "Now the Water".

The lead track "Leave the House" contains these catchy and punchy drum samples that sound fantastic. The kick is solid while the snare is tight and crisp. Simple synth patterns create melody along side Maine's vocals.

The single "Find Me" is a catchy synth/dance track. Again, the drum samples are solid and clean, keeping the song in motion. The synth strikes are simple but create a very danceable melody. More synth work enters throughout to create a pretty decent single.

On "Now the Water" we hear Maine use his indie-rock muscles. He uses pretty guitar chords alongside a basic drum pattern to create a very smooth and gentle indie song.

On The House, we find Porches branching off into different territory, specifically when approaching a ballad-style song. Maine does this on at least three tracks including "Understanding", "Country" and "Swimmer".

Personally, I think "Country" is the only one that panned out well. The airy and breathy synths chords/progressions lay underneath Maine's voice nicely. One of my favorite's on the whole project.

Overall, The House only keeps me interested for about half the album. Some of the album is catchy and poppy with infectious melodies and neat drum samples. While some of the album is very dull and boring. Especially towards the latter half when Maine's vocal performance becomes so tried and nearly annoying. Generally speaking, the synth work and percussion was awesome throughout the album. The drum samples were very 80's-esque; giving off vibes of dance, club and basic pop genres.

Definitely not my favorite Porches album, but it does have a few good hits. Listen below...
