Big Sean & Metro Boomin - Double or Nothing (G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam)

Released: December 8th, 2017

Contemporary hip-hop/rap members Big Sean and producer Metro Boomin come together for a new project, Double or Nothing.

Big Sean had an album release earlier in 2017 (I Decided) while Metro Boomin has been producing hits throughout the year, specifically on his recent album Without Warning (featuring 21 Savage & Offset). Metro also produced one of Big Sean's most popular tracks to date, Bounce Back.

This record spans 41 minutes and includes features from hip-hop notables, including Travis Scott, 2 Chainz, Young Thug and Rae Sremmurd's Swae Lee.

Highlights from this album include "Pull Up N Wreck", "Go Legend", "Who's Stopping Me" and "No Hearts, No Love".

"Pull Up N Wreck" includes these steady hi-hats intertwined with an anthemic background sample. 21 Savage appears halfway through the track and brings his aura, creating a solid vibe. Big Sean sounds normal as ever on this decent song.

The funk sample on "No Hearts, No Love" is a great touch. The chord progressions on the track are fantastic, especially alongside the simple percussion pattern. Big Sean's cadence fits with the style, synth work and simple instrumentation. One of the catchiest chorus' on the whole project; great song.

There are many misses on Double or Nothing though.

Although the beat on "So Good" is a very sluggish and bouncy instrumental, the lyrics just discuss acts of sex and vulgarity, specifically to a point where it becomes unlistenable and unenjoyable. Unless you're into Big Sean rapping about sex for four minutes, you can pass this one.

The Swae Lee feature appears on "Reason". Normally, Swae Lee has the ability to use his "boyish"-type voice to create those viral hooks. He attempts to do that on "Reason" but it doesn't workout the best.

All throughout, Metro's production and beats are solid, dense, and nocturnal, but they're also very expected and tried. The samples are unique when present, but the overall trap-style on Double or Nothing is pretty basic; nothing new or shocking.

Big Sean doesn't blow anything out of the water nor do any of the guests. His flow throughout is basic Big Sean.

Honestly, this project didn't do too much for me. It had a few decent tracks but nothing crazy. Listen below...
