Knox Fortune - Paradise

Released: September 22nd, 2017

Chicago based producer and musician Kevin Rhomberg, also known as Knox Fortune, is here with his debut album Paradise. Knox Fortune has produced for multiple hip-hop artists including Vic Mensa and Joey Purp, as well as having a feature on Chance the Rapper's track "All Night". This is his debut album under his own name.

I first caught wind of this album after listening to the singles, especially "Lil Thing". Hands down my favorite on the album, this is a nice and light indie-pop tune with hints of R&B and hip-hop groove. The chorus is simple and infectious, flowing with the percussion seamlessly. This single released during the summer and it was a perfect song for that season. This is a great single.

Other highlights to check out include "Help Myself", "Keep You Close" and "Stun (feat. Joey Purp)".

"Keep You Close" contains a piano melody that loops throughout the track along side some steady percussion and vocal melodies. "Stun" is a low-key hip-hop tune with a feature from Joey Purp. The drums echo and bounce from ear to ear while listening. The synths create an atmospheric layer that surrounds the track. Another solid tune with a nice feature.

Overall, this is a solid debut project from Knox Fortune. His sound is unique with pop-music sonics ringing throughout. The bass lines are funky, the melodies are groovy and light. This is a solid album if your looking from obscure indie-pop with heavy influence from hip-hop and R&B. Also can serve as some simple background music.

Injury Reserve - Drive It Like It's Stolen (Las Fuegas)

Released: September 29th, 2017

The Arizona based trio Injury Reserve is back with a new EP, Drive It Like It's Stolen. This is a follow up to their last project, Floss (2016).

I'm not a massive fan of this group by any means but I do truly enjoy their singles from their latest projects. But I have never liked one their albums from start to finish.

This EP caught my attention through the single "See You Sweat". Ever since I've heard this track I've had it on repeat. It's a solid party/hip-hop tune with such a killer groove. The chorus is somewhat provocative but it's so catchy. The beat is full of extra sounds including cop sirens, water drops and extra toms. Solid single.

Truly I enjoyed this EP from start to finish. Not a song I didn't like.

I love the low-key vibe of "91 Cadillac DeVille" and "North Pole". The beat on "91 Cadillac DeVille" very slick, and again, full of groove. "North Pole" is a slowed down jazz-inspired hip-hop tune. It also includes a very gloomy chorus, but it adds to the track greatly.

"Boom (X3)" is the hardest on the EP. The bass hits hard along side some aggressive verses from Ritchie and Stepa Groggs. A choppy piano melody plays throughout.

"Colors" is another solid song where the group touches on modern racial issues. A unique beat sits below the verses and chorus beautifully.

Very pleased with this EP from Injury Reserve. The production is solid, the beats throughout are fresh and new. This was an enjoyable listen. They deliver a consistent aesthetic throughout while still being able to show versatility and the ability to be non-stagnant.
