Future & Young Thug - Super Slimey (Epic Records)
Released: October 20th, 2017
ATL based hip-hop/trap all-stars team up for a new record, Super Slimey. Known for their solo projects, along with tracks that feature each other, these two have been dominating the hip-hop/trap realm for a little while now.
In February, Future dropped two albums a week apart (Future and HNDRXX) while Young Thug had a project drop in June along with an EP last month (Beautiful Thugger Girls and Young Martha-EP).
Outside of a few tracks, I'm not a big fan of these artists. I find their sound very repetitive and boring, but with all predispositions aside, I wanted to give Super Slimey a try.
Throughout the album, the production is extremely consistent and tight. The hi-hats are precise and clean while the low-key 808's are forever present. Some tracks contain some very catchy melodies and instrumentation, specifically "200", "Cruise Ship", "Patek Water", and "Real Love".
On each of these tracks, the synth work and pick-style melodies are smooth and intriguing.
"Cruise Ship" is light and breathable while the simple beat fills the spaces nicely.
The bell work on "Real Love" matches the cadence of Future and Thugger effortlessly.
"Patek Water" is one of the bangers from Super Slimey. The basic trap beat combined with the synth work make for something special. The Offset feature is a bonus.
Outside of these few tracks, I find this album so tried and stale after a few listens. The overall sound and production is so expected and boring. There are no surprises with this record, it's just straight-forward background trap.
On the other hand, if you are a fan of Thug and Future, check this album out. The highlights on the album are legit jams with solid bars and melodies. Their connection and collaboration is nearly flawless due to their unique styles.
Personally, I don't find this album as a whole intriguing, but if you do enjoy that contemporary trap/hip-hop style, flow, production, and aesthetic, check out Super Slimey. Listen below...
