Music of the Month: July 2017
Tyler, the Creator - Flower Boy (Columbia Records) released July 21st, 2017
Tyler, the Creator is back with his first album in two years, Flower Boy. Personally, I have never enjoyed any of Tyler's music. Possibly a song here and there, but he hasn't come out with a full project that a thoroughly enjoyed, until now.
Flower Boy is full of catchy beats, smooth R&B instrumentation, offers an awesome feature list, and exposes Tyler's softer side. It's a very laid back listen with the exception of "Who Dat Boy" and "I Ain't Got Time!", which are the most aggressive on the whole album.
The single "911/Mr.Lonely (feat. Frank Ocean)" is my favorite Tyler song and my favorite on Flower Boy. I love the Frank Ocean feature so much, I feel like he adds so much to the track. The chorus is infectious along with the nice and punchy drum samples. The transfer to the second half changes the mood of the song completely. It goes from bright to dark but they fit together perfectly.
Another infectious chorus can be found on "Boredom (feat. Rex Orange County and Anna of the North)". I love the gentle chords and percussion throughout, fits Tyler's flow nicely. "See You Again (feat. Kali Uchis)" is a great track as well. The song starts very simple and then the instrumentation blooms halfway through the track. The chemistry between Tyler and Kali is flawless.
The production throughout this project is top notch, the features are awesome and it sounds like Tyler at his best. Listen Below...
